“And what about renewables?”: Analysis of content, discourse, and perspectives in digital media on the energy transition in Spain and the European Union

The energy transition in the new European agenda seeks the “deployment of renewable energies” towards a decarbonized energy model. Policies, commitments, and regulations have been outlined for member countries, along with other actions aimed at socio-cultural change, environmental awareness, and climate consciousness among citizens.
Generating “public opinion” on this issue is essential to encourage change. Currently, access to this information is dynamic, diverse, and continuous with digital media: its consumption and influence.
The expression of socio-territorial character, with governance and citizen participation, implies the support, criticism, or rejection of the population regarding renewable energies generated, also, in the digital mass media.
This research uses the methodology of Content Analysis (CA), through the concepts of agenda setting, priming, and framing, to identify and characterize the writing of news about energy transition from the meaning, semantics, and positions expressed in the publications of the most consumed digital media in Spain during 2023 and 2024.
The presentation showed the results of the analysis, the discourse established in digital media, and the potential impact on the public as agents of this change in model.
